The 2008 general election brought with it not only the historical changes for the nation, but an opportunity for advocacy groups all over the country to be a presence and a voice for barrier free access to the ballot.  At Disability Rights Mississippi we took on the challenge of being very vocal in the state, striving to bring awareness to the general public and to those involved in the elections process about the fundamental right to vote.  We began with a radio campaign encouraging voter registration and active participation in civic life by individuals with disabilities. We followed that campaign up with another radio spot, highlighting Election Day and the distribution of our Polling Site Survey.  Included in this campaign was a guest appearance on talk radio 97.3, in which our Community Services Advocate, Shirley Walker, was interviewed by Senator Terry Burton about voting rights and obstacles still faced in MS.
